Our Vetting Process
Every contractor is personally vetted
by our team — not an algorithm.
If we won't put our name on it, we won't send you to it. Here's exactly how we verify every contractor in the Roofer Ron network.
Most contractor matching sites rely on a quick credit check and some online reviews. That's not enough. A contractor can have 500 great reviews and still be underinsured, off-license, or bait-and-switching on quotes. Roofer Ron exists because we weren't willing to send homeowners down that road.
Here's every step of our vetting process, in the order we do it.
State contractor license verification
Every contractor has to provide their state home improvement or roofing contractor license number. We verify it directly with the issuing state authority — not just by asking for a copy of the certificate. If their license is expired, suspended, or under investigation, they're out.
Authorities we verify with: New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs
Why it matters: Unlicensed roofing work can void your insurance, fail inspection, and leave you with no legal recourse if the work fails.
Active liability insurance — current policy only
We require every contractor to submit a current Certificate of Insurance showing at least $1,000,000 in general liability coverage plus active workers' compensation. We verify the COI is current and contact the insurance broker directly if anything looks off. Expired COIs aren't accepted, and we re-verify annually.
Why it matters: If an uninsured roofer's employee gets hurt on your property, your homeowners insurance can be left holding the bag. A COI protects you.
Minimum 4.5★ rating across 50+ real reviews
We pull the contractor's ratings across Google Business Profile, the Better Business Bureau, and at least one independent platform (Yelp, Angi, or HomeAdvisor). They have to maintain a weighted average of 4.5★ or higher across at least 50 legitimate reviews. We also read the 1★ and 2★ reviews — because what a contractor does when something goes wrong tells you more than a 5★ bomb.
Why it matters: Anyone can generate a handful of 5★ reviews. A high rating across hundreds of reviews, with visible recovery from the occasional bad experience, is the real signal.
Team-reviewed work samples
Every contractor submits recent project photos, references we can call, and a sample written quote. Our team reviews them. We're looking for clean workmanship, documented scope, honest pricing, and — critically — no hidden fees or aggressive high-pressure sales tactics in the quote itself.
Why it matters: A 5★ rating and valid license can still mask predatory sales practices. Reading the actual quote and references catches what reviews can't.
Ongoing accountability — one strike risks removal
Vetting once isn't enough. Every homeowner we match with a contractor gets a follow-up to make sure the experience met expectations. If a legitimate complaint comes in — pressure tactics, scope creep billing, unresponsive communication, work quality issues — we investigate. If the complaint checks out, the contractor is removed from the network.
Why it matters: A contractor being good two years ago doesn't mean they're good today. Accountability is continuous.
